For us, the Baronage of Forgotten Sea means opportunity. Opportunity to continue some of the healthy progress that has taken place over the last several years; and opportunity to help spur new growth and new progress in the future. It is an opportunity to give back to our friends so much that they have given us; and an opportunity to make new friends and give ourselves to them. The Baronage of Forgotten Sea is a chance to take what we have learned from others and apply our own style, experience, and knowledge and hope for future prosperity. The current Baronage of Forgotten Sea has brought the Barony back from the edge of collapse and has built up a strong populous and strong Cantons. When Their Excellencies stepped up, the average attendance of a Baronial Populous Meeting was about a dozen people. Today, there is an average of fifty people attending meetings. We hope to continue this upward trend. They have put money in the coffers and started many new programs and Guilds. They have brought back some of the pageantry and magic that makes up The Dream(tm). It will be a tough act to follow. The job of the next Baronage, as we see it, is to strengthen the Barony even more. To encourage new growth and bring back those Peers and Households that are in the area, but do not necessarily play at a local level. The Baronage of Forgotten Sea means providing leadership and guidance to those that would follow. And people will only follow those they can trust and believe in. What is the purpose of the Baronage? They are the voice of the Crown of Calontir for Their Barony, and They are the buffer between the Barony and the Crown. They should encourage the Guilds and activities, and give structure to the meetings. But, They also need to let the Officers of the Barony do their jobs. The Baronage should preside over meetings without ruling over them and manipulating all of the time. They should oversee activities that occur at meetings and events, and monitor the progress. The Baronage needs to pass on word and edict from the Crown. They are the voice of the Crown. They also reflect the Crown, and need to comport themselves as such. They are the representatives of the Crown. They should attend to The Crown when they visit. Listen to the Crown when They speak, and carry that message back to the Barony. This can include such things as Edicts, changes in Law, general information, and Awards for persons not able to attend Court. What are the duties of the Baronage as we see them? It is the duty of the Baronage to preside over local meetings, and add a touch of pomp and circumstance to make the atmosphere more medieval. It is also a duty to report to the Crown on matters concerning the Barony. It is a duty and privilege to be able to pass on awards of persons unable to attend Court. It is a duty to oversee activities within the Barony. It is a duty to recognize the good deeds of the populous. However, it is also the duty of the Baronage to intervene when necessary, and to counsel when called on to do so. It is the duty of the Baronage to make sure all the Barony's Officers are reporting to their superiors, and that the Cantons are reporting properly. It is a duty to ensure that the Baronial Officers are performing their jobs, and offer assistance or replace them when necessary. While there are many Good Things(tm) that come with the job, there are also many responsibilities and not so good things that come with it. And while we would like to not focus on them here, having worked closely with TEs for the last three years, we are aware of what most of those are, and can be. Interaction with the Baronial Officers It is the job of the Baronage to assure that all the officers are doing their job and reporting as needed. But it is not the job of the Baronage to do the job for the officer. A Baronage should allow all officers to do their job to the best of their ability and only interfere when the obligations of that job are not being met. While it is the job of the officers to keep the Barony functioning, it is the duty, right, and responsibility for the Baronage to preside over the Baronial meetings. For that reason, the Baronage should decide on when and where those meetings should take place. However, these decisions should not be made in a vacuum. Interaction within the Barony It is the responsibility of the Baronage to try and accommodate the largest amount of people; the greatest good for the greatest number of people. To that end, the populous should be surveyed and demographed so that a proper time and location for meetings and practices and activities can be determined. It is very much our will that meetings be held in a central (to the populous) location and at a convenient time. The Barony of Forgotten Sea has two cantons, one if the SW and one in the NE. It is our opinion that Baronial functions should occur somewhere in the middle. However, in KC, that would put most of the activities in some very rough neighborhoods, and as Baronage, one must keep the safety of one's populous in consideration. It is our opinion while the Baronage should preside over the meetings, it is not necessary for there to be a 'Court' at every meeting. The same as never having one is bad, having them too frequently can also help lead to the decay of the sense of royal presence that is part of the privilege of being the Baronage. We would propose to hold Baronial Court once a month at a Baronial meeting, and once every three months at Canton meetings. This gives an incentive for the populous to come to baronial meetings, but does not penalize people who only participate in Canton activities. At meetings where Court is not being held, the Baronial Seneschal should be in charge of organizing the meeting. Classes in medieval arts and sciences held at Baronial meetings should be encouraged by the Baronage and its Officers. Life in the Society is also a relevant topic, as are guild meetings and large group activities. Baronial meetings should encourage the populous to a greater level of activity. It is also our opinion that with the Cantons in the SW and NE, that most of the other activities, archery and fighter practices and so on, should take place as central as possible. This sometimes is not possible however, and as special needs are required, it is possible that those activities need to be moved to meet those needs. We recognize those special needs but would still encourage those activities to remember the adage already mentioned above; the greatest good for the greatest amount of people. As to Baronial Awards, they are one of the pleasures and duties that the Baronage has. But it is important to remember that while one should not be stingy on rewarding good deeds, one should not cheapen an award by giving them too frequently or for marginal service or deeds. It is a balance that must be learned and applied carefully. Interaction with the Cantons The same as the Barony reports to the Kingdom, and is responsible to the Kingdom for certain things, so too should a Barony's Cantons report and be responsible to the Barony. In Forgotten Sea, the Cantons are very strong, and function primarily as independent shires. That should continue, with little interference from the Baronage except where asked for by the Cantons themselves. We look forward to encouraging a closer relationship between the Cantons and the Barony. Interaction with the local Peers and Their Households It is our belief that to further strengthen the Barony, a personal effort must be made of the Baronage to work with the local Peers and Their households in an effort to unify those groups for the betterment of the Barony as a whole. To help bring those skills back to the populous so that all may learn from them and set them as an example for others to follow. To try and end some of the political splits that may exist and show all groups that any path may be correct if it eventually leads to the greatest good and fun for the greatest number of people. Interaction with Kingdom Events As we are both very familiar with hosting Kingdom Events, we know the level of commitment it takes at a Baronial level to meet the obligations of the Barony in terms of hosting the required events. We also know that it is a responsibility to ensure that the Barony have bids available for events that it will be responsible for. As Baronage, it is necessary to ask for volunteers to complete obligations, and take responsibility when none are present to volunteer. Interaction with the Crown of Calontir We also feel that it is the responsibility of the Baronage to interact with and ensure the needs are met of visiting Royalty, whether they be our own Crown, or the Crown or Coronets of other areas. It is also nice, when possible, to provide for the comfort and needs of visiting Royalty. Sometimes this will entail ensuring a Privy Chamber is provided, and other times it will be meeting the call for largess or specialty requests. It is the part of being the Ceremonial head of the Barony, to ensure that the little things that add to the pomp and circumstance get met. It is also important to know the populous of the Barony well enough to be able to answer questions and requests from the Crown regarding a certain individual or need, and be able to work with the Crown to answer their questions and meet Their needs. Interacting with other Baronies & Groups It is also important to communicate with other Baronies and groups. Sometimes a Baronage may look to 'older' Baronages for advise and counsel on a subject. Sometimes a Baronage must coordinate bits of Court business with other Baronies or groups to enhance the atmosphere in relation to an event or some other activity. Other times it is to coordinate much larger business at larger Kingdom events; or even to work out who is going to answer particular calls, deeds, and needs from the Crown. Who should be Baronage? This is the tough question that the Crown must answer. It is also the section where we get to 'sell' ourselves and our reasons why You should select us. Candidates for Baronage should not 'come out of the wood work.' They should be people that have been involved in the Barony, and its activities. They should not apply for the Baronage to meet some hidden agenda or to further the cause of any one given group. They should be people that are going to do the best for the Barony because they believe in doing the best for the Barony. We have been intimately involved with nearly every aspect of the Barony for the last three years. We have been a part of the fighter practices and are both authorized fighters. We have been to nearly all the Baronial meetings for the last year, and certainly the majority of the meetings over the last three years, not to mention regular attendance of Canton meetings. We have been involved with the archers and have supported them at several of their functions and practices. We are both artisans and involved with several of the Guilds, including but not limited to the lace, brewing, scribes, and fiber arts guilds. We have attended meetings of both Cantons and are aware of their current situations. We have been to every single event the Barony and its Cantons has held for the last 5 years, which is far more than most can say, and we have worked in some form at nearly all of them. Our SCA participation can hardly be challenged. On an average of the last 3 years, we have attended in Kingdom events 63% of the weekends there were events scheduled. For weekends with inter-Kingdom and out-of-Kingdom wars, we have attended an average of 61% of those. (About 40 out of 52 weekends, total) We have averaged 100% of the Baronial events. We have participated in many demos, including RenFest for the last several years. We travel to as many events and attend as many wars as life will allow us. We have even been known to travel to other groups in the area and attend their meetings. We have also traveled to groups outside of Calontir as ambassadors from Calontir and Forgotten Sea. We are both extremely active on the local, the Kingdom, and the Inter-Kingdom/Society level. In what position would we like to see the Barony after our time as baron/baroness? One of our goals is to approach some of the households within BFS and find out what it would take to get them active again on a local level. We would like to see bigger attendance at meetings, and hope to achieve that through good PR, happy households, and new members. More new people, more returning people, and a large core of active people will contribute to the health of the Barony. We hope to affect an increase in the interest of Baronial activities. This can include the meetings, practices, classes, and guilds. We would like to see a more educated populous through the use of classes and guilds. More classes means more people that are educated in medieval activities and culture, and better prepared for the SCA. We hope for continued participation in RenFest and support of the Lilies efforts. Our goals are to see the Barony become larger, more educated, and even more active.
